At Hair Fairies Chicago lice treatment salon we had a parent bring us cupcakes from Molly’s Cupcakes down the street. They were so good! The client is actually a teacher at a school where we did a free school screening recently. The teacher came in for a head lice screening for herself, since we found Head Lice on six of her students.  She said she has taken all the necessary precautions to avoid a lice outbreak in her class, and this still happened.

The Case of the Nurse substitute!

Children’s head lice can go undetected in schools for months on end. It isn't until itching persists and/ or bugs and eggs are found on the scalp and in the hair that their lice is found. Some families get lucky in detecting lice early and get treated before the lice infestation gets any worse. There are also some families that may be misdiagnosed and get screened by a Hair Fairy Technician right away to find that they are completely clear of Head Lice. It is not a bad thing, but rather a good thing to be screened right away. In this special case a Frantic mother called minutes after hearing of her two daughters having lice. She called Hair Fairies as she picked up her girls from school and was able to book lice screenings for the whole family. As we started with the daughters, one mentioned “I can feel the bugs crawling everywhere!” We quickly came to find that they were ALL lice free and the substitute school nurse made a mistake and misdiagnosed them. We also heard from the daughters that they were referred by their best friends and the reason they wanted to go to Hair Fairies was because their friends had so much fun watching movies and coloring while getting treated for lice!

Learn a thing or two about Lice

At Hair Fairies Chicago lice treatment salon, we had a little girl who had a severe infestation of head lice. During her lice removal treatments we were able to get to know her well. Her personality was so friendly. As the hours went on sitting in our treatment chair -- she would see different children come and go. Some had Head Lice and some did not. She would ask every child that would sit next to her or across from her, “What’s your name? How old are you? What school do you go to? What grade are you in?” etc…  She was so curious and witty. It was enlightening and refreshing to see this child (with such a curious personality) make the best (of a not so fun) situation.  And I think we should all learn from her. Sometimes in life you might have to do things you’re not too happy doing or placed in uncomfortable situations. But when you end up in situations like Head Lice sometimes the best thing to do is smile. Make some friends. Learn a thing or two.

 

 

When head lice is going around in school, the school sends a letter or email to the parents so that parents can check their children's hair. Parents will check their kids' hair for lice but most parents don't really know what they are looking for. When examining your child's hair for head lice, you need to look for the nits (eggs) not the actual bug. The nits are cemented to the hair shaft. You will not find nits on the scalp of your child's head. The reason for why you will not be looking the bug itself is because when you open the hair, the head lice will move away from the light. Head lice move very fast going from hair to hair in half of a second. The nits are cemented to the hair shaft and they do not move. The nits are not white, they go from light brown to dark brown. If you are confused, and cannot distinguish lice from dandruff, all you have to do is try to move what is found on the head. If it moves and it flakes away, it is dandruff. If it doesn't move and feels like a tiny pebble, then you have found a nit. When checking your child's head for lice, check very thoroughly for about 15 minutes, if you don't find anything, check again in a week just in case that your child has an early infestation. When the nits are first laid, they are translucent and are very hard to see.

As we approached our March Free Screening day, I was very impressed at the steps parents are now taking to prevent head lice. It is very important that every school aged child is checked for head lice on (at least) a monthly basis. We had previous clients bringing in their friends and new families who booked appointments on our free lice screening day. We were busy with parents trying to be on top of the head lice outbreaks in their schools and community. I got a phone call from a client saying that her daughter had gotten lice three times.  Each time her mom treated it the head lice came right back. She told me that she had treated her the night before and that when she took her daughter to school that day the school nurse found a louse on the child. I asked what lice treatment was she using to try to get rid of the head lice in her daughter's hair. She then tells me "I shampooed my daughter's hair with the Rid shampoo and then I combed her out." At the Hair Fairies Lice Treatment Salon in Chicago we had a client with super long hair...about 10 feet long. She was a pre-teen and has never had a haircut in her life!
