Keeping kids in School and Away from Head Lice

 The Chicago lice treatment salon operated by Hair Fairies, recently conducted a large school screening for lice this week. When the principal called she said “We are having a lice outbreak at our school and it seems that we are sending kids home everyday…We need help.”  Without hesitation we said “of course we can help. Most people wonder where did the head lice come from and how did the child's school get head lice, if the school had been cleared of head lice already. Most lice infestations occur during school vacation. Many people decide to travel and visit family during vacations. During their stay, they encounter head lice, and then travel back home with it. The kids will then return to school and it spreads from kid to kid, and kid to parents and siblings, and so on. When you are traveling to a relative's house, you should sleep on freshly clean sheets. You shouldn't sleep on sheets that your relative had slept on the night before. You should travel with your own towels, combs and hair ties so that you don't have to borrow your family member's items. You should consider having your child(ren) sleep by themselves, since it is very easy for the head lice to travel from head to head if the children are sleeping together. We had a mom today at our Chicago lice treatment salon who has been dealing with Head Lice for 2 weeks. She is the mother of two beautiful girls...all had long hair, including mom. So here is how the story went: Hair Fairies had a frantic family who called more than a few times. Unfortunately the daughter complained of itching while at their visit to the famous San Diego Zoo - so mom looked at her scalp. YES, IT WAS LICE!! Frantically Mom called to learn more about lice removal with Hair Fairies but did not want to put a stop to their fun filled day. Since they were in town visiting San Diego for the weekend, they were staying nearby our busy international shopping area and location. Our Hair Fairy lice removal technician came up with a solution to help them since the salon was soon to close for the day. The Hair Fairy technician would meet with the family at the nearby shopping area so they could carry on with their fun day AND Hair Fairies could help the family at the same time. They agreed and planned for an afternoon of lice treatments! As the Hair Fairy arrived to the location to meet the desperate family she noticed a child constantly itching her scalp. Was it another family with lice? Was it the family who needed her help who had scheduled? (Stranger things have happened believe us :)). YES it was them! Mom first asked if the hair fairy technician could have her daughter checked first!? A client came in with her daughter and she tells us her story of how God answered her prayers for finding a solution for her daughter’s hair lice. There had been an outbreak of head lice in her daughter's school, so she decides to check her daughter's hair for lice. She instantly sees head lice walking on her daughter's hair. “Lice to meet you!” is the phrase Mike Rowe, Discovery Channel’s, “Dirty Jobs” host, used when he came to our Hair Fairies Head lice salon in San Francisco.  It was one of the most memorable experiences we had, educating the public on what we do as a full service head lice salon on TV! 

The show was a hit and we have gotten a lot of calls when the show first aired. Even today, we would receive calls from Arizona, Alaska, Florida, and basically all over the United States from people who had watched the segment on lice removal.

If you haven’t checked or watched Hair Fairies - the head lice helpers on Dirty Jobs on The Discovery channel, make sure you check your TV listings for Re-runs.  There were things that happened that were surprisingly good and entertaining, while educating about lice all at the same time!   In that regard, it was a very “Lice to Meet You” kind of moment!

This is a true Hair Fairies client story….A mother gets the dreaded call from her sons’ school: “Your son has head lice!”  “WHAT?” “LICE?” “How?” “Are you sure?”  She hangs up in disbelief. Frantically she starts to run around the house stripping the beds. She starts to wash all clothing in the house. Her older son is watching the chaos unfold in front of his eyes. He tells his mom to calm down. “CALM DOWN?” (Almost at a nervous breakdown) “Do you know they found head lice on your brother?” “Mom, RELAX! It’s no big deal. Five teenage girls get together for a sleepover. They have a blast together: watching movies, telling jokes, dressing up and doing each other's hair. What a fun sleepover, right? There was an uninvited guest there (a predator if you will)! One of the girls (victims) a few weeks later is very itchy on her scalp. She is scratching and scratching her head. She thinks it's dandruff or dry scalp.  When she removed her hands out of her hair one day, she was amazed to see a bug on her hand (HEAD LICE). AHHHH!!! She goes and calls her girlfriends to tell them she has discovered lice on her scalp. Another girl has her parents look in her head and they see nothing (untrained inspection and easy to miss). When she looks at her own hair in the mirror, she discovers a head louse walking on a strand of hair. The other girls decide to just book an appointment at Hair Fairies to get checked for head lice. The five friends all had head lice and booked their appointments together to get help with treating the lice. They all decided this will be a sleepover to remember with the sleepover bug.

The Love Bug:

Can you believe it’s February? It’s the month of love! Friends, families, Moms and Dads are hugging , giving each other flowers, chocolate, etc. Or Head Lice?
